Frugal Dining

A great way to get a cheap meal is to go to an expensive-at-night place for lunch. How is this frugal· Typically, you can request certain night-dishes that aren't on the lunch menu and for an equal-sized portion, get it at a reduced lunch price. The nicer the restaurant, the better your odds (at least in my experience).
One thing to never skimp on is the tip (if your service was good). I've been fortunate enough to never have been a server but I have many, many friends who have been and they get paid next to nothing. When I was growing up I was always embarrassed by the paltry tips my parents would offer: 10% if the waiter was godlike and descending quickly from there. I personally would rather skip desert and leave a good tip because being frugal is no excuse for being cheap.
