Delta / Northwest Merge

It's rumored that Delta and Northwest are about to merge. I'm not really sure how I feel about this because I love flying Delta and absolutely hate flying Northwest. In fact, I have long-since sworn off traveling on Northwest Airlines because I never, and I mean, never had an easy flight. The worst was when I was stuck in Memphis for a night and practically nothing was covered by the airlines "because of the weather". I do my job in bad weather...
Frankly, I don't understand how airlines stay in business at all. It doesn't seem like it's very cost effective and I've wondered for years why the government doesn't either completely subsidize it or just take it over. Plus, assuming the government took it over, surely the security issues would plague travelers less; they'd be in control of the flight lists from day one. I realize that sounds a little fascist but when I fly I just want to go where I'm going.
