Poor in San Francisco

This morning, while waiting at the airport, I read an article in the SF Gate about a Bay Area couple unable to make ends meet on $50,000. Is this supposed to be shocking· Chicago isn't nearly as expensive as San Francisco but I don't think a couple with two kids could make it here on that low of a combined salary either.
Of course my heart goes out to these people--they're both working hard and doing their best to provide a decent life for both themselves and their kids. It's more than most people are willing to do and I certainly respect that. But trying to eke out a living in ANY major US city is a difficult task and if there are better options in the suburbs and you're able to find work there why don't you just move·
