Do you really need a financial planner? There is no hard and fast rule to determine when you need professional help. The level of financial advice available today ranges from very superficial to very detailed. This site, while not superficial, can only help so much on an individual basis since everyone's situation is so different. People with modest means and goals can generally learn to to their own financial planning with help from professionals in product selection and occasional help from tax and legal experts.

The more complicated your financial picture and the more assets you own, the more you will benefit from the services of a professional. Be cautious using advice from professionals paid on a commission for selling products they are advising you to buy. While most are legitimate professionals, you'll occasionally find an unethical one who'll sell you just about anything as long as there is a substantial commission for him.
