Sugar Tax

Looks like San Fran is ready to impose a high fructose corn syrup tax. I think that's great. They tax smokers for smoking because of the down-the-road health costs so I think it's only fair they start taxing the rest of us for our health decisions. Even though you couldn't pay me to live in San Francisco I commend their mayor for trying new things out there--even though I would absolute hate being a citizen under his wacky quirks.

Does Ohio have a sugar tax? I got carry out icecream sundaes and the girl at the counter charged me a sugar tax???!!! Could she have been covering up a miscalculation?

Per Ohio Revised Code 5739.01(EEE)(2), ice cream is a "food" and is NOT taxable. The referenced sugar tax applies primarily to beverages in instances where sweeteners (sugar, flavors, syrups) are added to beverages, such as iced tea and coffee, by the vendor. Items such as tea and coffee purchased either plain or with milk are not taxable (considered "food") and only become taxable when the vendor adds the sugar. Long and short: ice cream is food! No tax applies. Add sugar to your coffee or tea yourself and avoid the sugar tax!

Why do places charge tax on sweet tea, but if one gets packets of sugar from the sames place, there is no tax?
