Art Belongs in Museums

I was really disappointed to read in Bloomberg that Van Gogh's The Fields is about to be displaced from its current location in a museum to move into the hands of a private collector.
I guess I just don't see the point in singularly owning a great piece of art. Maybe I just don't have the personality that wants things to be mine so I can say that it's mine. Art exists to the benefit of all mankind and frankly I don't think it's fair that some of the greatest works aren't on public display. If you had unlimited funds you could essentially wipe an artist off the face of the earth by just buying up all his/her pieces and I can assure you that's the last thing the originating artist would have ever wanted.
